Community Involvement – Planting at Ōpoutama Wetlands
At Te Mahia School, we believe in giving back to the whenua (land) and the wider community. Our students recently worked alongside Rongomaiwahine Iwi Trust (RIT) to plant native trees in the Ōpoutama Wetlands—a valuable initiative that supports the restoration and health of this precious ecosystem.
This hands-on mahi connects our tamariki with kaitiakitanga (guardianship), reinforcing the importance of sustainability and caring for the place we call home. It’s about protecting and enhancing our natural environment for future generations and strengthening our ties with iwi and local kaupapa.
By taking part in projects like this, our students learn to value the land, build relationships with the community, and understand that small actions can make a big difference.
